Every social circle would start with a quote or mindfulness activity. During the month of February, we started most morning meetings with a quote to celebrate women's history month that also connected to weekly skills. These quotes we to help them gain confidence and build connections to social-emotional learning content. This quote started our social circle during the first week in February when our week's theme was behavioral skills.

Social Circle was a time for the whole class to be together and discuss new social-emotional skills in a way that did not feel like a lesson, but a space where we could connect and build connections to ourselves, but also others.

Social circle provided many key indicators for me when it came to individual students. As we sat in a circle on the rug, I was able to identify students who were not as engaged during certain topics because they knew that was an area where they needed improvement. As time went on, the informal data about students and the areas of strengths or weaknesses showed. I was able to better tailor my lessons to build stronger lessons for them, but also provide real world examples.

This is an example of how informal data from student engagement and what skills needed emphasis or retaught. In this lesson we discussed how our words and actions have an impact on each other through the "Drama-Roma". This visual was the key that students needed because it gave them real statistics and connected it back to them. When discussing that 1 one in five 5 students are bullied we used our class as a sample for that number to discover 4 four students in our class could be bullied. Since bullying could lead to suicide, those 4 four students in our class would not be here anymore. That reality was hard for them. They realized that their actions and words hold power and influence others. From that day forward, students tried to present their feelings towards others in politer terms than the previous five weeks.
